【英語】12月の英単語たち
- flock to~:大勢でおしかける。(例)People flock to the seaside in summer.
- 「どこかでお会いしたことがあるかもしれません」は「We might have met somewhere before」という。「今までにお会いしたことはないですよね?」と確認するには「I don't think we've met before.」という。
- redeemは「redeem one's honor(名誉を挽回する)」のように「回復する/挽回する」の意。
- elicitは,引き出す。(例)elicit an opinion from a personで「人から意見を聞きだす」の意。
- freebieは口語で「おまけ」
- fiascoは「大失敗」の意。The project ended in a fiasco.で「計画は大失敗に帰した」となる。
- 本社をあらわすheadquartersはsをつけるのが通例。hdqrsと略す。
- seasoningで「調味料」の意。
- 「混乱して混同してしまった」というには「Sorry, I mixed you up with someone else.」と言う。
- 相手の会社を知らないときにはForgive my ignorance, but what kind of company is it?という。
- Where are you based?と活動の拠点を訪ねられたらWe are the US based firm but live in Tokyo.などのようにいう。
- それは別の話である → That's another story.
- uptick(上昇する)を使って,「景気の回復の兆しがまったくみられない」はWe don't see any signs of an uptick in the economy at all.という。
- havoc(大混乱)やwreak(もたらす。リークと発音)を用いて,「この政策は経済に大打撃を与えるだろう」はThis policy would wreak havoc on the economyという。
- 口語で素敵なパーティーであったとはfabulous partyという。
- cryptocurrency・・・暗号通貨
- scrutinyをつかった例文 → 「彼の理論は綿密に調べればボロが出るだろう」はHis theory won't bear scrutiny,「この噂は検証にたえない」はThis rumor doesn't stand up to scrutinyという。
- 困ったときはrun into troubleと表す。例えば「困ったときに相談する人がいない」はThere is no one to consult when I run into trouble.という。
- customer baseで顧客層の意。例としてWe would like to diversify our customer base.という。
- 正確にこたえられないときへの対応として,例えば厳密な数字を覚えていないときにはoff the top of my headを使う。ある製品の正確な重量をしらないときにOff the top of my head, it's about 5 kg.などと答える。また,定性的なことを推測ベースで答える時には,It's just a guess, but...とかI can't say with any authority / confidence, but...のように切り返すとよい。
- ビジネスシーンで次につながる別れ方の決まり文句としてI've really enjoyed talking to youやIt was really nice talking to youという。
- 「追って連絡します」はI will contact you soonという。
- overnightには「一晩」という意味以外に「一気に」というニュアンスがある。例えばThe reward made our product famous overnight.のように,「その受賞によって我々の製品は一躍有名になった」のように使う。
- linger・・・いつまでも残る,手間取る
- bounce back・・・跳ね返る
- 〇〇一般として使われるout there。例えばThis is a warning for young people out there.でこれは若者一般に対する警鐘であると用いる。
- teleconference・・・遠隔会議。手段は電話でもビデオ会議でも何でもよい。
- experience・・・「経験する」以外にも「陥っている,生じている」というニュアンスで用いられることもある。
- 「会議システムが不調なので調整してほしいとお願いをするとき」には「Could you please adjust / check your settings?」という。
- 「音声が聞こえずらいとき」には「Sorry, I can't hear you. Could you speak a bit louder / speak up?」という。雑音が入っていて聞こえずらいときには「Sorrym the sound is not clear.」と言えばよい。
- 「今日は先日言及のあった点について議論したいです」というには「I'd like to discuss the points you raised.」だったり「I'd like to discuss theitems you mentioned.」などという。
- 「事前予約がこの店では推奨されている」は「An advanced booking is recommended for this restaurant.」と言えばよい。
- anomalous・・・変則的な。たとえばanomalous verbで変則動詞。
- 月を超えるほど飛び跳ねてしまうぐらいのうれしさを表すときにはover the moonを使う。
- bring downで①~の値段を下げる,②~を打ち倒すの意。
- tweakで抓る(つねる)。
- impossibleと面前でいうのは表現として強すぎるので「I don't think it's possible」とか「I don't think we can do that.」のように婉曲表現を用いる。
- fair enoughは最初は納得していないがその後の説得を経て納得した状態で使う。
- 妥協するcompromiseのかわりにmake a concessionという言い方も。
- doubleを動詞で使える。It's possible to double our earnings in five years(5年で売上倍増は可能です)
- 「代引き」=cash on delivery(COD)
- 交渉では相手のbottom lineを探るのがコツ。
- 交渉をしていて①相手が驚きを表した時には不意を衝くつもりではなかったとフォローするとよい。たとえばI don't mean to catch you off guardという。また,②感情的になった相手に対してはI'm just trying to see if it's possible for us to meet halfwayと折り合える点をみつけようとしていたといえばよい。それでも埒があかないときやちょっとヒートアップしたなというときはWould you like to take a break?と言ってクールダウンする。
- 注文する=place an order
- 信用上限=credit limit。例えばOur buyer can't get enough credit from their banks to pay right away.
- ある主張に対する理由を教えてもらいたいときにはWould you mind giving us the reasons behind it?やCould you please give us some more background?という。それでも教えてもらえないときには,教えてもらえると先に進むことができるということを相手に伝える。たとえばIf you could provide some more information we will be able to move forwardやDo you have any suggestions on how we can move forward?という。

- 雑談から重要な要件に話題を移す時のフレーズ=Now, let's get down to the business.
- 私の理解では未解決なのは価格だけです=As I understand it, the only outstanding / unresolved issue is the price.
- あと残っているのは事務的な問題だけです=There're just a couple of administrative issues to be solved.ここでjustが入っていることで実際には大きい問題かもしれないがたいしたことはないという印象を与えることができる。
- 人生いろいろある=It's normal that there're ups and downs in life.
- 簡単に解決策が見つかることはない=There's no instant solution to the problem.
- 一緒に取引をできて光栄です=We're pleased to be able to do business with you.
