2月の英語表現
- anxiousはこれから起きること(将来に対する)不安をさす。例えばHe was anxious about whether or not he will be promoted.
- 表面上は…だが実際には…だ。On the surface / in theory..., in practice / in realityといったバリエーションがある。
- assignはビジネスシーンではよくつかわれる。例えばI was assigned to head the next project.で「次のプロジェクトの統括を任された」など。
- 「名刺を切らさないほうがよいでしょう」はYou should make sure not to run out of business cards.
- 「服装について気にするに越したことはありません」はIt never hurts to be overdressed.という。ほかにはIt never hurts to try something new.で「新しいことに挑戦することは良いことだ」となる。
- 海外の人にも現地と同じやり方に従ってもらう必要があるということを伝える時にはYou must follow the same rule...というと厳しく聞こえる。そのため,「人」を主語にせず一般論として聞こえるように,The same rule holds true for foreign visitors.のように言う。
- 感謝するときはappreciateを使うがgladを使うとよりストレートに聞こえる。例えばI'm glad that you are prepared to follow the rules of the local culture.
- with great careをつけることで丁寧に接していることが伝わる。例えばI always try to talk to my staff with great care.でスタッフには言葉を選んで話すようにしている。
- 尊敬をえるの「得る」はearnを使うのが通常。例えばPaul began to earn the respect of his subordinates.
- 「努力をすればちゃんと取り合ってくれる」はIf you show some effort you will be taken seriously.
- 「日本のビジネスマナーは当地よりは少なくとも最初の段階ではフォーマルなものです」はManners in Japan are a bit more formal than they are here, at least in the initial stage.
- 「続けてください」はGo on.
- 「ご意見のある方はいますか」はDoes anyone have anything to add?という。
- 「これから質問の時間に入ります」はThe floor is now opened to questions.
- 相手の意見を否定するときは後半部分は肯定表現にする。I'm not sure if that's a good idea.とかI don't think this proposal is acceptable.など。
- 「最後までしゃべらせてください」はLet me finish my sentence.
- 「顧客層を広げる」はdiversify our customer baseという。
- The committee members come from a variety of backgrounds.で「委員会は多様なバックグラウンドをもつ人からなる」となる。
- 「プロジェクトの現状を報告する」はupdate / share the current status of the projectとなる。
- 議論の的を絞る際にはWhat do you think is the key?という。Howは使わない。
- holistic=包括的な/全体的な
- spoeadic=散発的な
- proliferation=激増
- disproportionate=不釣り合いな
- corroborate=確証する。There's nothing to corroborate your storyで「君の話を裏付けるものはなにもない。」となる。
- faultのほうが一般的だがshortcoming(s)を「短所」の意味で用いることも。例えばmake up for one's shortcomingsで「短所を補う」となる。
- 「善はいずれ勝つ」はGood will prevail.
- 「こちらは前菜になります」はHere comes the starter.
- deep fried=油の入った鍋で揚げたもの。fried riceでチャーハン。
- crispy touch=しゃきしゃきした歯ざわり
- rich chocolate cake=濃厚なチョコレートケーキ
- totally new=斬新な
- 「お墨付きを得た」=We have a ringing endorcement / stamp of approval.
- 「著名なゲストをお呼びしています」=We have a prominent guest today.
- 「率直なご意見をお聞かせください」=We would like to hear your frank / honest opinion.
